IT strategy at family-owned business MUNK Group

The MUNK Group, a leading manufacturer of climbing and rescue equipment with high quality and safety standards, is continuing its „IT Strategy 2026“ with mesakumo as a partner consistently. Following the successful joint development of the IT strategy Late 2023 accompanied mesakumo the company is now for 2 years in the structured control and implementation of the defined ITProjects. The aim is to ensure transparency, accountability and prioritisation in the strategic implementation of IT. 

Initial situation

After successful collaborative development of the new IT strategy Late 2023 the MUNK Group was faced with the Task, the contained therein IT projects to manage efficiently, to maintain the strategic direction and to deal with emerging strategic IT issues. The strong corporate growth and the and the resulting increasing demands on the IT environments require a rigorous Programme–Mmanagement that ensures both operational implementation and strategic oversight.

Against this background, it was mesakumo commissioned to oversee the implementation of the IT strategy as an externalr To support partners through a structured IT programme–Mto support management. The linchpin of this should be a quarterly steering group comprising be to the entire executive board, at which interim reports are approved and Decisions are made.  

Solution

The strategy is being implemented for the past two years and the coordination and programme management together with mesakumo set foot on several elements: 

  • The focus and commitment of MUNK’s senior management team:
    Establishment of an IT strategy steering group, which meets quarterly and acts as the central body for monitoring progress, prioritisation and decision-making. Project managers report regularly to this group on the status of their IT projects, the results achieved and the next steps to be taken.
  • Clear internal responsibilities:
    Right from the outset of drawing up the IT strategy, it was decided for every future project who would take on the role of project manager and who would be required to contribute their specialist expertise. This pays dividends during the subsequent implementation – in the form of rapid implementation, consistent progress and minimal competition for the key personnel in the projects.
  • Weekly meeting between IT management and mesakumo:
    Regular exchange between the Head of IT of the MUNK Group (who also acts as internal programme manager) and mesakumo to promptly clarify progress, open issues and dependencies.
  • Strategic exchange at management level:
    Regular discussions between the MUNK management and mesakumo founder Fabian Kracht to discuss strategic issues, priorities and the further development of the IT strategy in a small circle.
  • Quick decisions through ad hoc working sessions:
    Quick, topic-specific consultations with those affected and decision-makers, e.g. in the context of a new ERP implementation or for cloud-versus-on-premise decisions, to enable project teams to make clear and timely directional decisions.

The combination of management focus, clear internal responsibilities, sufficient capacity in IT and business departments, structured external governance support, close operational guidance and strategic sparring ensures that the IT strategy does not just remain on paper, but becomes reality step by step.

Result

Through internal clarity and the external IT programme–Mmanagement the MUNK Group has established a clear, transparent and sustainable structure for the implementation of its IT strategy. 

  • The steering committee ensures regular transparency and a shared understanding of progress and priorities.
  • The weekly coordination ensures operational continuity and solution-oriented action.
  • Strategic workshops help to make important decisions on a fact-based and future-oriented basis.
